Death As A Motivational Tool

''This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.''

There is nothing in this universe more powerful to humans than the fear of death. It’s that gigantic elephant in the room. The fact that we are all dying is something us in the west refuse to address. We pretend it’s not there, distracting ourselves with superfluous things and hoping it will go away. We either refuse to think about it, or we quell the fear with a religious belief system that packages it all up nicely. It gives us some rules to live by and takes away most of the fear with the thought of an afterlife. Even then though, you find most of us aren’t convinced deep down.

We are all in our own way terminally ill. We have all been given a death sentence, but no one thinks too much about that. Unless a terminal illness hits us and we are given an expiry date by a doctor. What happens then? All the bullshit, all the fear that normally holds us back goes out the window. You find most people cram more living into their final months than they did their whole life before their expiry date being read to them. It’s sad it has to be that way – when we have all have expiry dates. We just don’t know exactly when it will be – just a long way off somewhere, we hope – so we don’t bother thinking about it. At all times death lurks there in the background waiting to spring us at any moment.

When we think about this, we realise that death is the most powerful motivation tool on the planet. A lot of powerful and influential figures throughout human history have harnessed this and used it for motivation. If they can, so can you and I.

I thought to myself, how can I harness this power every day and keep it at the forefront of my mind? My answer was the below. I wrote it, read it aloud, recorded it, and I listen to it every morning to remind myself I have nothing to lose. I have no real reason to be scared of trying this, or saying that – that it all slips away in the face of death. So here it is:

Death As A Motivational Tool 

As you listen to this, in this moment; this is the oldest you have ever been in your life. Conversely, this moment here in which you hear these words is also the youngest you will ever be in your life again. You will never get a chance to live this day again. You will never again experience and see what it brings. There will be no second acts for you. There will be second chances, no repeats. This is it.
With this comes the poignant fact that today could be your last. Today could see you write your last words, speak your last sentences and draw your last breaths. Because as each moment goes by death tightens it’s grip upon you, ever so slightly. Bringing you closer to a time when you will cease to exist. You will live on through your friends and the ones you love. The memories you left with them. You will live on through the work you did and the impressions you left on the world. You have only one chance to write your story and one only. There is no turning back now. How does it read, your story?
What impression will you leave on the world? What will people say about you and how will they remember you? Will your tale be a tale worth telling so far? And if not, what’s holding you back from your greatest work? Is it fear?
Steve Jobs Death
Whilst life can be scary and doing all the things you want to do and ever dreamt of doing makes you tremble – how does the fear compare to death? How does it compare to living an unfulfilled existence? As Steve Jobs says in his Stanford commencement speech:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.

Almost everything–all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure–these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.’’ 

 
Because everything pales in comparison to death. It all slips away when you are staring straight at the eternal abyss that is death. All your fears dissipate and seem small and minor in comparison. As Seneca says:
”Place before your mind’s eye the vast spread of time’s abyss, and consider the universe; and then contrast our so-called human life with infinity.”

So how will you live your life now? How will you play out all of your dreams? What impression will you leave on the world? Because you’ve been given one chance. One fleeting and finite window of life that people in hospital beds are fighting for right now. That still borns never got. That people fight for every day all over the world, and many have it stripped from them. How will you make your existence count and how will your store now read? Make it a good one. Life may be scary, but nothing is scarier than dying without living your life. You will never get another chance.

So get living, seise the day.
